Who wrote the lost Gospels?

No one knows for sure who wrote the lost Gospels. Even though the names of Jesus’ apostles and other companions are attached to some of these supposed Gospels, no evidence exists to suggest that the authors of these texts even might have been eyewitnesses of the ministry of Jesus. In many cases, names such as “Mary” or “Philip” have been attached to these Gospels simply because these individuals are such prominent characters in the book. In a few instances—the Gospel of Thomas, for example—the Gospel does claim to come from a prominent apostle or church leader, but it is clear from the language used in the book that the document was written long after the death of its namesake.

Why were the lost Gospels written?

Some of the lost Gospels were later fanciful accounts of Jesus’ life. Others were written to promote a theology that contradicted the eyewitness testimony found in the New Testament. A few—such as Gospel of the Lord and Gospel of the Ebionites—may have been variations of the New Testament Gospels, edited to fit the theology of certain sects. Still others—for example, Infancy Gospel of Thomas, Infancy Gospel of James, and perhaps Gospel of Peter—seem to have been penned by well-meaning Christians who felt compelled to expand stories in the New Testament. Many of these writings don’t directly contradict anything in the New Testament, but they tend to expand the New Testament accounts in fanciful and problematic ways. For example, according to these writings, Jesus used his divine powers for his own benefit throughout his childhood.
